The mission of the 100 Black Men of Omaha (100) is "to improve the quality of life in Omaha by helping our youth reach their fullest potential." We seek to achieve our mission through Mentoring, Education, Health & Wellness and Economic Empowerment programs. Our programs include Leadership and Mentoring Academy, Striving for Success Black Male Summit, African American History Challenge, 100 Saturday Academy, Real Men Read and Real Men Greet.
Today the 100 is one of over 100 chapters internationally that make up the 100 Black Men of America, Inc., an alliance of leading African-American men of business, industry, public affairs and government. For an organization with an operating budget of just over $400,000, it is both effective and efficient, with the funding it utilizes. Since its inception, the 100 remains a visible and viable resource for the Omaha community and continues to do its part to improve the quality of life for all Omaha citizens.
The 100 is an organization that has an asset that sets it apart from other organizations in Omaha having similar sounding missions. This difference is a solid core of African-American men committed to making a difference in their community with a common mission of helping our youth reach their fullest potential.
The 100 sparks a sense of being Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Lead in its youthful target audience by being positive mentors and role models setting an example in a continuous and meaningful manner.
We are committed to the intellectual development of our youth and the economic empowerment of the African-American community based on the following precepts: respect for family, spirituality, justice, and integrity.
Mentoring the 100 Way serves youth 8 to 18 years of age, who primarily come from low-income single parent homes. We address many facets of our mentee's life, including the importance of education, attendance and attitude toward school, social skills, and interactions with their peers, parents and teachers. We also, emphasize the significant affect higher education has on their life-long success.
Since 2008, our mentees have experienced a 100% graduation rate with 93% attending post-secondary institutions or military service.
The 100's mentoring programs include:
One to One Mentoring promotes goal setting, positive decision-making, career exploration, high school graduation, and post-secondary education for males in grades 6th-12th. Mentors provide a positive impact on mentees' self-esteem, helping them to become Respectful, Responsible and Ready to Lead. Mentees spend one-to-one time with their mentors and participate in a series of workshops.
Group & Tag Team Mentoring helps to build relationships with mentees in a group setting. This also, provides opportunities for the mentees to develop essential life skills and leadership traits for success in and out the classroom. The goal is to build confidence, self-esteem, and a positive self-image. Mentors reinforce guidelines for success using Steven Covey's "7 Habits of Happy Kids" and "7 Habits of Happy Teens." We also have added an addition to the 100's group mentoring that we have labeled "Real Talk with the 100" in which creates a safe environment for mentees, mentors, potential mentees, and potential mentors can come together and have real conversations that have a focus but are allowed to be organic - so that we are addressing conversations that our 6th-12th grade young men are dealing and coping with. This also creates a space that organic matches can occur and creates a space that individuals who are not ready to be a one to one match can still provide impact and a voice to the youth that the 100 serves.
Pathways to Success (PTS) An extension of our mentoring efforts. The program design provides participants with early opportunities for career readiness, employability skills and financial literacy for mentees, students and parents served by our programs. PTS program consists of an orientation, workshops, a teen career fair, on the job shadowing experience, development and presentation of business plans to a "Stark Tank" panel, and a graduation ceremony for all participants.
Striving for Success: Black Male Summit The purpose of this daylong summit is to motivate African-American 9th grade males to pursue excellence in education and receive presentations from local experts in the areas of Education, Business, Health, Faith, Money & Finance and the Justice System. We focus on this audience because they have been identified as being at-risk for failing to graduate from high school, being under employed and over-represented in the criminal justice system.

Saturday Academy In partnership with Title I and Omaha Public Schools, this program coincides with the OPS school year and addresses the educational, cultural and self-esteem gaps experienced by 3rd - 6th grade students. Students receive support from state certified teachers to master concepts in reading, writing and mathematics. To enhance learning, enrichment activities and group mentoring incorporated into the curriculum.
In partnership with Title I and Omaha Public Schools, this program coincides with the OPS school year and addresses the educational, cultural and self-esteem gaps experienced by 3rd - 6th grade students. Students receive support from state certified teachers to master concepts in reading, writing and mathematics. Moby Max is a measurement tool used in 73% of K-8 public schools to track the progress of academy students. Moby Max is an easy to use extension and intervention program that helps students in the area of reading and math. It is an engaging and interactive program for personalized student instruction.
Provide workshops to engage parents/guardians in the students' learning process. In addition, these workshops provide tools necessary to strengthen the parent/guardian relationship between school and students.
African American History Challenge (AAHC) This flagship competition created in 2001, is a reading program designed by the 100 Black Men of America to enhance the study of African-American history and culture among middle and high school students. Over its tenure, the AAHC has provided over $350,000 in scholarships and awards to deserving Omaha area students of all races and ethnicities.
Real-Men-Read (RMR) Mentors donate substantial hours in front of our young people emphasizing the importance of reading.
Real-Men-Greet (RMG) RMG program allows mentors to help students build social skills, and self-esteem, which encourages a positive "jump start" to the student's school week.

"The thing I love most about being a mentor with the100 Black Men of Omaha is that it provides an opportunity for me to give back to the community and potentially be a positive impact in a young man's life. It's also quite amazing how much of an impact my mentee has had on me. We learn and grow from sharing with each other during our outings. I frequently find myself reflecting back on my own childhood experiences and sharing situations and outcomes that help generate thoughts rather than attempting to always provide answers. "My name is Caleb. I am a senior at Omaha North High School. I entered the program under the 100 Black Men of Omaha looking for a math tutor. I ended up meeting some of the most positive African American men within our community. Some of those men are Mr. Christopher Wiley, Mr. Steven Gray, Mr. Ed Stevens, Mr. James Mason and Maleeque Parker. From the program, I have gained experience in the area of finance, starting my own business and how to present myself better in this world as an African American man. I am fortunate to have these men in addition to my father and brother. I have also appreciated that whenever I wasn't at my best they would not look down at me but instead they gave me support. In the summer and fall semester I carried a 3.0. I've been accepted to UNO where I plan to major in Aviation. I am going to be a pilot." Caleb
