Food Bank for the Heartland distributes emergency and supplemental food to families in need in Nebraska and western Iowa. The Food Bank distributes food to 530 network partners including pantries, schools, meal providers and other nonprofit organizations.
For every $1 received, the Food Bank can distribute enough food for three meals. According to audited financial records, 96 percent of what the Food Bank receives goes toward its mission. Approximately 220,000 people in the area served by the Food Bank are considered at-risk for hunger. Over 87,000 are children. The Food Bank's distribution has grown from 6.5 million pounds (or 5.4 million meals) in 2009 to 19 million pounds (or 15.8 million meals) in 2016.
From Kelly Gudenrath, behavior facilitator at Ashland Park Robbins Elementary School in Omaha. "I am the facilitator of the Food Bank's BackPack program here. The BackPack Program makes a huge, huge difference in the lives of the children and the lives of our staff members because we feel better when children are going home with food for the weekend. It's the best part of Friday mornings because they come, they're happy, they're excited. They're running down the hall, which they should not be, but they're so excited to get their food."

From client of Food Bank Mobile Pantry Program. "I recently participated in the Mobile Food Pantry in Brewster Nebraska. I want to tell you how thankful and blessed we are to have this offered to us here in rural Nebraska. I currently drive over 50 miles to get to a decent grocery store that doesn't break my budget. I know this will only grow as more people try this exciting opportunity. Thank you so much, my kids were excited when I brought home 2 big boxes of food!

From a mother whose child participates in the BackPack Program. "I would just like to express how grateful I am to your donors and volunteers. My daughter was selected for the BackPack Program and is especially fond of the chocolate milk and juice boxes she receives. Our monthly food budget is small and we get the necessities so it is nice on Friday when she gets a healthy treat."

From coordinator of local Mobile Pantry. "Thanks to you and Food Bank for the Heartland there were many happy people. One I remember is a mother, child in a wheel chair, one with braces that she either carried or sat on the floor plus another child for the total of three, and then someone said that her husband/Dad had left them. So great to be able to help these people."
