Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, foster and re-home abused, neglected and abandoned animals. We transfer animals from high-stressed situations to temporary foster housing and provide medical attention until matched up with a loving fur-ever home. In addition, we help people in need with assistance to enable them to keep and care for their pets.
We strive to educate the community by raising the public's awareness to the plight of homeless animals as well as realizing the numerous benefits that comes from adopting a rescued animal. When called upon, we reach out our hand to help with guidance and information to enable responsible pet ownership. We do our best to assist people in our local community who are going through a rough patch or those with low incomes, especially our seniors, by providing much needed food and medical services so they are never faced with the decision of losing their companion(s) and ensuring their animal(s) will not see the inside of a shelter.
HBH does not have a physical shelter; our incredible foster parents offer up their hearts, homes, and lives to foster the animals we rescue. Our all-volunteer team does everything from record keeping to photographs to Facebook & Tweeting to driving and even colony care!
It is only by the graciousness of our supporters that we are able to attain our goals and save lives. We so greatly appreciate the support we are given and we believe success shows in the faces of our rescues and the loving smiles of those in need!
They work so hard for the animals- go over and beyond!! They also help so many elderly pet owners with food etc. so they can keep their animals!! Great people behind this organization!! Kim Heyen

Simply one the best experiences I have had. Joni was the kindest lady and I could tell she genuinely cared not only for the animals but for ensuring their future home. She was able to link my girlfriend and I up with a foster family that was also amazing. Within a day of speaking with Joni, we were able to adopt a kitten and can see that he was well taken care of because of the foster home he was in. It is organizations like this that signify that there are still caring people in the world that will spend the time and effort to give these loving animals a chance at a better life. If you ever are wanting to add a member to your family, I highly suggest going through Homeward Bound and after speaking with Joni for just a minute - I can safely say you will feel the same! I wanted to thank Homeward Bound of the Heartland for the assistance they gave me when it came to getting medical attention for my cat "Snickers" urinary issues. I had spent a small fortune at another vet clinic, who had misdiagnosed Snickers and treated her with 2 doses of antibiotics that were extremely expensive and did not work at all. I couldn't afford another $250 vet bill, and didn't know what to do.
If it wouldn't have been for the help and kindness of Joni, and the Homeward Bound Group, I don't know what I would have done. My cats are my world to me, and I can't stand to see any living creature suffer.
Joni got Snickers in to see Dr. Sarah Mongan at Goodrich Veterinary Clinic, and she did not turn her back on us when we needed her. She is a caring veterinarian and she is "in it for all of the right reasons." She takes care of the animals and does not put the almighty dollar sign ahead of their care!
God Bless Homeward Bound in the Heartland, Dr. Mongan and everyone else that assisted in getting care for Snickers. My baby girl is happy, and healthy, and I have been truly blessed.
Every kind deed that you do comes back to you. Thank you for caring about the animals as much as I have throughout my life. I will continue to take in the strays that need someone to love them and I will always be thankful to Homeward Bound and Dr. Mongan.
Thank you! Sharon Sobolik
